William Lynch,

William Miller Lynch, Jr., one of four children of William Miller and Ethel Hazena (Horton) Lynch, was born April 19, 1925 at Marshall, Arkansas. He received his formal education in the Marshall public school system.

World War II was in progress during Bill?s schooling, and in 1943 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served for three years until his honorable discharge in 1946.

On June 20, 1945 Bill was united in marriage to Arlene Fellers in Long Beach, California. The couple would be blessed with four children: Rebecca, William III, Kathryn, and Lee.

Following his discharge from the Marines, Bill and Arlene settled in Auburn, Nebraska. Bill worked for a time at the Hinky Dinky Store in Auburn, and in 1948 joined the Postal Service in the Auburn Post Office. He worked for the Postal Service until his retirement in 1980.

Bill was very active in his church and community. He served for many years as the janitor at the First United Methodist Church in Auburn. He served on the Auburn City Council, the Auburn Board of Public Works, and was a charter member of the Auburn Rescue Squad. He had also been a member of the Auburn American Legion and VFW Posts, the Drum & Bugle Corps, the Auburn Volunteer Fire Department, Auburn Country Club, and Postal Service organizations.

In spare time Bill enjoyed woodworking and golfing, and liked listening to Big Band music and learning about the Lewis & Clark Expedition. He was also known to spoil his grandchildren every chance he got.

Due to complications with his heart and other health problems, Bill became a patient of the Nebraska Heart Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. It was there he passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at the age of 82 years and 13 days. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bill is survived by his wife Arlene of Auburn; children Rebecca Lynch of Auburn; William M. Lynch III and wife Barbara of Auburn; Kathryn Hansen and husband Randy of Lenexa, KS; Lee Lynch and wife Mary of Auburn; grandchildren Joanna Lynch; Jennifer Gooding and husband Eric; Jeffrey Lynch and wife Shannon; great-grandson Connor William Gooding; sisters Ruth Ross of Kansas City, MO; Jane Stewart and husband Frank of Kansas City, MO; brother Sam Lynch of Springfield, MO; sister-in-law Lenora Fellers of Syracuse, NE; other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were Saturday, May 5, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church in Auburn, officiated by Rev. Harold Backus. Special pre-recorded music was played. Honorary bearers were Sterling Norvell, Jim Jarvis, Bill Milam, Marvin Larsen, Marvin Caspers, Rick Bourne, Charles Coatney, Jim Oestmann, Dave Hunter, Jack Kent, Jr., and Eldon Swinney. Burial of ashes followed in the Sheridan Memorial Cemetery west of Auburn.
