Sylvia Ella (Grable) Fass, one of three daughters of Julius E. and Ella H. (Volker) Grable, was born September 21, 1925 on a farm near Humboldt, Nebraska. She was baptized October 11, 1925 at St. James Lutheran (Long Branch) Church, and confirmed February 11, 1940 at the same church. Sylvia attended Prairie Hill School near her home.
On October 16, 1947 Sylvia was united in marriage to Orval Glen Fass at Long Branch Church by Rev. Harm Bents. They made their home on Orval’s family farm, where they both would live out their lives. The couple was blessed with five children: Harley, Rosalie, Harold, Arlen, and Marlys.
Sylvia devoted her life to raising her children, running the household, and helping on the farm. Later in life she did some babysitting for her grandchildren.
After her marriage Sylvia became a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church south of Johnson, Nebraska. A member for almost 70 years, she was active in the Women of the ELCA and the quilting group at the church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking and canning. Sylvia would always put family first in her plans.
In October of 2014, after a fall, Sylvia entered the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn for rehabilitation. On February 20, 2015 she was admitted to the Nemaha County Hospital in Auburn, Nebraska, where she passed away two days later on Sunday, February 22. She had reached the age of 89 years, 5 months, and 1 day. Her parents, husband Orval, infant sister Alberta, and sister Berneda Holthus preceded her in death.
Sylvia is survived by her children Harley and wife Mary Ann Fass of Ashland; Rosalie and husband Don Hitzeman of Humboldt; Harold and wife Kathy Fass of Auburn; Arlen Fass of Hickman; Marlys Fass of Omaha; grandchildren Cameron Fass, Carissa and Regina Hitzeman, Michael and wife Angie Fass, Megan and husband Ryan Kraemer, Kristin Fass, Clinton Fass, and Eric and wife Amanda Fass; great-grandchildren Jaden, Abraham, Braxton, Ryder, Ava, Tristan, and Isaac; other relatives and friends.
