Norma Joy Mehlin was born May 8, 1926 to Leah (Shurtleff) and Joy W. Mehlin on the family farm in Nemaha County near Humboldt, Nebraska. Norma attended Bratton Union School, where she graduated from high school. She continued her education at Peru State College, and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.
Following college, Norma taught in the Auburn, Nebraska public school system for 42 years until her retirement. Following her retirement, she continued to substitute teach as she was needed.
Norma was a member of Pleasant View Methodist Church near Humboldt until its closing, when she transferred membership to St. John Lutheran (Stone) Church in rural Auburn, where she was active in the Women of the ELCA and other church functions.
She held numerous memberships in local, state, and national education associations throughout her career, and also belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma, Falls City Area Retired Teachers, Auburn Woman?s Club, and the Golden Rule Social Club. Norma enjoyed crafts, reading, and working with her garden flowers in the spring and summer months.
Able to live at her home through her 86th birthday, Norma became a resident of Belle Terrace in Tecumseh, Nebraska in October of 2012. She passed away there on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at the age of 86 years and 6 months. Her parents preceded her in death.
Norma is survived by her cousins Valerie Abid of Cupertino, CA; Robert and Lida Leech of Omaha; Richard and Trina Leech of Omaha; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be Monday, November 12, 10:30 a.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery near Humboldt. Visitation will be at the funeral home Sunday noon to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 2:00 to 4:00.
