Margaret Ann (Masur) McConnaughey was born July 26, 1937, on the farm west of St Mary, Nebraska to Johnnie L. and Mary A. (Schultz) Masur. She was the first of three children born to this union.
She attended St. Mary Catholic School through eighth grade and graduated with the Sterling High School class of 1956. From the home place she traveled to Peru State College earning a Teaching Certificate. She taught rural school in Gage County and then #42 School in Johnson County the following year.
On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1958, Margaret was united in marriage to Thomas Rex McConnaughey in St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary, Nebraska. They welcomed three children, Mary Ann, Rose Mary, and Johnny Rex.
Margaret was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tecumseh, Nebraska, and St. Clara Catholic Church in Peru, Nebraska where she was a member until death. She was very active in the parish, held many positions with the St. Clara Catholic Altar Society and taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) for many years. She was a charter member of the Peru Rescue Squad and proudly served positions within the Peru Cemetery Association, Nemaha County Voting Staff and Oregon Terrace Apts. She loved making gardens and canning the fruits of her labor. She made friends easily and considered all friends as family.
Margaret passed away on March 29,2023 having reached the age of 85 years, 8 months and 3 days. She is survived by daughter Mary (Sarah) McConnaughey, of Omaha, Nebraska, grandchildren Keshard McKinney, Cori Flores, Chad Greer, Christian and Jonah Schimpf, Sarai DeLaVega, Jackie Martinez and Javi Llanas; and great grandson Israel Schimpf; daughter Rose (Jim) Downing of Rock Port, Missouri, grandchildren Julia and Antonio Vargas; son Johnny McConnaughey of Peru, Nebraska, grandchildren Stephen Gallentine, Amber (Charlie) Ramsdale and great grandchildren Able and Arya. Sisters Geraldine (Tom) Sherman and Wilma (Jack) Stinson all of Tecumseh, Nebraska, and nine nieces and nephews.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie & Mary Masur, beloved husband, Thomas Rex McConnaughey, and granddaughter Megan McConnaughey.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, April 3, 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Auburn. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Peru. Visitation will be at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn on Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 3:00 to 5:00.
