Mabel Holman Holliday, one of two children of William Geach and Sarah Ann (Armstrong) Holman, was born May 6, 1901 at the family farm northeast of Auburn, Nebraska. Mabel attended a country school near her home through the sixth grade, and then boarded with a family in Auburn to finish her schooling at Antioch School and Auburn High School, graduating in 1919. She went on to the University of Nebraska, where she was a charter member of Sigma Kappa sorority. Mabel graduated in 1924 with a B.A. in Education.
On June 25, 1926 Mabel was united in marriage to Ray W. Holliday, Sr. at her mother?s residence in Auburn. The couple purchased a drug store in Hebron, Nebraska, and moved there within the year. They were blessed with two children, Patricia and Ray, Jr.
After her husband?s death in 1956, Mabel remained in Hebron until 1961, when she moved back to Auburn to stay. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, and was active in the United Methodist Women. Mabel was also a member of PEO Chapter DB and the Order of the Eastern Star. She belonged to many bridge clubs, and later in life developed an interest in playing dominoes. Other activities Mabel enjoyed included sewing, putting together scrapbooks, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Mabel was able to live in her home in Auburn until March 0f 2003, when she became a resident of Long?s Creek Assisted Living in Auburn. She entered the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn in March of 2009, where she enjoyed visits from family, friends, and staff. With her family around her, Mabel passed away at Good Samaritan after a brief illness on Friday, May 21, 2010 at the age of 109 years and 15 days. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law Charles and Helen Holman.
Mabel is survived by her daughter Patricia and husband Thomas Gibbons of Naperville, IL; son Ray, Jr. and wife Janet Holliday of Lincoln; grandchildren Mark Gibbons, Thomas and wife Janet Gibbons, Ann Gibbons, Ray III and wife Shelley Holliday, David Holliday, Amy Dusbabek, and Steven and wife Lindsay Holliday; great-grandchildren Ray IV, Ashton, Regan, Sarah, Quinn, and Vaughn; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 25, 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Auburn. Burial will follow in the Sheridan cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Monday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00.
