Mabel Ann (Piasente) Garber, one of three daughters of Casimiro and Joanna (Sbardella) Piasente, was born September 17, 1937, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. She attended and graduated from Laurel Valley School in New Florence, Pennsylvania, and then earned an Associate Degree from Cambria Rowe Business College in Johnstown.
On June 30, 1962, Mabel was united in marriage to James P. Garber at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Florence. In 1966 the couple made Brownville, Nebraska, their home.
In Brownville Mabel and Jim owned and operated Garber’s General Store. Mabel also served as Nemaha County Treasurer for many years. She also worked for Randall Smith on the Belle of Brownville.
After Jim’s passing on December 8, 2005, Mabel remained in their home in Brownville for several years. In 2013 she moved to Tarkio, Missouri, where she was a member of St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church.
On Tuesday, February 20, 2018, Mabel was rushed to Community Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri. She passed away there that evening at the age of 80 years, 5 months, and 3 days. In addition to her husband Jim and parents Cas and Joanna, she was preceded in death by her sister Kathy Rogers and Jim’s parents.
Mabel is survived by her sister Lillian “Rudi” Piasente of Yaphank, NY; niece Stephenie Rogers-Scott and her husband Matthew Scott of Islip, NY; grand-niece Samantha Scott and grand-nephew Daniel Scott; special friend Mike Christiansen of Tarkio; her beloved cat Sam; and many friends.
A funeral service will be Thursday, March 1, 10:30 a.m., at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Burial will follow in Walnut Grove Cemetery at Brownville. Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the Rosary being prayed at 7:00 p.m.
