Luverne Hamann

Luverne Nick Hamann, one of 14 children of Fred and Rose (Steckler) Hamann, was born December 10, 1928 in Richardton, North Dakota. He attended school in Taylor, North Dakota, and then Dickinson when his family moved there.

In January of 1951 Bud joined the U. S. Army and served as a tank driver with the 11th Cavalry Regiment stationed at Camp Carson, Colorado. He even drove a tank in a movie filmed at the Camp while he was stationed there. Following his honorable discharge in January of 1953, Bud went to Auburn, Nebraska to take a job driving a rock truck for Guy Mehlin, who he met earlier on a job in North Dakota.

The move to Auburn was fortunate for Bud because he met the love of his life, Eugenia Wintz. They were married on September 12, 1953 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Auburn, and would spend the next 57 years together in Auburn. Four children: Leonard, Gary, Kay, and Kathy, were born to this union.

Bud spent most of his life driving. After his job with Guy Mehlin he drove trucks for both Darling Transport and Darling Transfer. He owned his own trucking company for a time, and after selling it drove for Wynne Transport. Even after retiring from truck driving he continued to drive, shuttling cars for Tincher Auto Company.

Bud was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Auburn American Legion Post #23, Auburn Eagles, Auburn Country Club, Auburn Sports Boosters, and had been a member of the Elks Club in Falls City. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren in their sporting events. Bud also liked to tinker with motors, large and small, and just about anything around the house that needed a ?tune-up?. Most of all, though, Bud loved his family and spent all the time he could with them.

In August of 2009 Bud?s health dictated that he become a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn. After over a year of being lovingly cared for, it was there Bud passed away, surrounded by family, on Sunday, October 17, 2010. He had reached the age of 81 years, 10 months, and 7 days. He was preceded in death by his infant son Leonard, parents Fred and Rose, parents-in-law Ludwig and Gladys Wintz, brothers Rudy, Ed, Pat, Clarence, and Chris, and brother-in-law Leonard.

Bud is survived by his wife Eugenia Hamann of Auburn; son Gary and wife Amy Hamann of Gonzales, LA; daughters Kay and husband Rick Steiner of Bozeman, MT, Kathy and husband Gene Taylor of Auburn; grandchildren Jennifer and husband Craig Jones, Chris and wife Joellen Hamann, Beth and husband Matt Seegebarth, Jason Steiner, Nicole and husband Matthew Fulbright, Ashley Taylor, Kristi and husband Kelly Ernest, Kala Taylor, Allison Hamann, Kylie Hamann, and Rececca Steiner; 8 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters Marie Koffler of Dickinson, ND; Jeanette and husband Ron Anderson of Portland, OR; Rosella and husband Val Steiner of Bozeman, MT; Mel and wife Patty Hamann of Portland, OR; Dorothy and husband Bill Bruce of Milan, TN; Patty and husband Vic Focht of Beaverton, OR; Gene and wife Linda Hamann of Portland, OR; Shirley and husband Frank Kelly of Billings, MT; sisters-in-law Lillian Hamann of Dickinson, ND; Virginia Wintz of Auburn; other relatives and friends.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 22, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Auburn. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery near Auburn, with graveside military honors provided by American Legion Post #23 of Auburn and the Nebraska National Guard Honors Team. Visitation will be Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Rosary will be recited at 7; family will greet friends following the Rosary.
