Luetta Lura (Haack) Volker was born March 19, 1927 on a farm in Johnson County near Tecumseh, Nebraska. One of seven children of Julius and Emilie (Deubler) Haack, she was baptized April 17, 1927 and confirmed November 30, 1941, both at Martin Luther Lutheran Church near Johnson. Luetta attended country school near her home, graduated from Elk Creek High School, and received her teaching certificate from Peru State College. Luetta began her teaching career in country schools in southeast Nebraska.
On April 17, 1952 Luetta was united in marriage to Erwin Volker at Martin Luther Lutheran Church. They made their home in Rohrs, Nebraska and would be blessed with two children, Gary and Christine.
Luetta continued her teaching career at Brock Public Schools and then at Tecumseh from 1968 until her retirement in 1991. In all she taught young people in the area for 44 years. During this time Luetta also continued her own education, earning first a Bachelor’s and then a Master’s Degree in Education.
As a member of St. James (Long Branch) Lutheran Church since her marriage, Luetta taught Sunday school and Bible school at the church for many years. She liked to play cards with friends and family, and enjoyed cooking and baking for family gatherings.
Luetta and Erwin moved to a home in Johnson just before Christmas in 1993. Erwin passed away in June of 1997, followed five months later by their daughter Christine. Luetta continued to live in Johnson until suffering a stroke in October of 2014.
She passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Center-Auburn at the age of 87 years, 7 months, and 4 days. In addition to her husband, daughter, and parents, Luetta was preceded in death by her sisters Doloma Rinne and Oleta Rinne, brother Lorraine Haack, and granddaughter Deann Volker.
Luetta is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Gary and Kathy Volker of Johnson; grandchildren Leann Volker and Brandon Volker; great-granddaughter Emma Rose; sisters Elda Beethe of Elk Creek and Doloris Bohling of Auburn; brother Roger Haack of Beatrice; sister-in-law Kay Haack of Nebraska City; many other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be Monday, October 27, 2:00 p.m. at St. James Lutheran (Long Branch) Church near Elk Creek. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home in Johnson Sunday noon to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00.
