Lily Beatrice Ghering Harvey, one of five children of George Hollis and Hilda Hazel (Crawford) Ghering, was born August 13, 1921 in Titusville, Pennsylvania. She was baptized in the Free Methodist Church in Titusville. Lily attended Shreve rural school and graduated from Titusville High School in 1939.
On November 6, 1940 Lily was united in marriage to Robert Ami Harvey at the Methodist parsonage in Westfield, New York. This union was blessed with four children: Robert Thomas, Gerald Judson, Linda Mae, and Brian Eugene.
Lily and Bob attended the Transylvania Bible College at Freeport, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1958. They attended church two years at White Oak, Pennsylvania from 1940 to 1942, at Centerville, Pennsylvania from 1942 to 1954, and at Bible Colleges from 1954 until 1959. From 1960 until 1985 they served as missionaries in Papua, New Guinea. They did postgraduate work at the Aldersgate School of religion in Hobe Sound, Florida in 1969 and 1970, and were given honorary doctorates from Transylvania Bible College in the mid 1980?s. From 1985 until their retirement in 1998 Lily and Bob pastored seven churches in six states.
After retirement, Lily and Bob resided at Paris, Kentucky until moving to Alma, Nebraska in 2002. There they lived at the Hillcrest Terrace Assisted Living and then Parkview Manor. In February of 2004 the couple moved to the Beaver City Manor in Beaver City, Nebraska. Robert passed away on October 30, 2007, and in May of 2008 Lily became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn in Auburn, Nebraska.
Lily enjoyed her time at Good Sam in Auburn, where her grandson Jeff could watch over her. She passed away there on Monday, March 9, 2009 at the age of 87 years, 6 months, and 24 days. Besides her husband, Lily was preceded in death by her parents, son Robert, brothers Donald Ghering and Thomas Ghering, and sisters Ruth Stover Daniels and Jennie Shreffler.
Lily is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Linda and George Kelley, Jr. of Marion, MI; sons and daughters-in-law Gerald and Donna Harvey of Auburn, NE; Brian and Lois Harvey of Owenton, KY; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday, March 14, 2:00 p.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Burial will be at a later date at Stevenson Cemetery in Greenville, PA. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
