Leonard Eugene Allen, one of five sons of Willard and Ella (Williams) Allen, was born November 26, 1922 on the family farm near Nemaha, Nebraska. He attended Maple Grove School and graduated from Nemaha High School.
On April 16, 1944 Leonard was united in marriage to Roberta Jean Vosberg. Leonard entered the United States Army shortly after, and served during World War II as a nurse in the 133rd Evac Hospital in Germany. After his honorable discharge in June of 1946, Leonard returned to Nemaha and his wife Jean.
Leonard and Jean were blessed with four children: Jon Robert, Van Eugene, Michael Dean, and Lynne Marie. They made their home in Nemaha until Jean?s passing in 1968. Leonard married Anita Avis Proctor on April 1, 1969. They were together for 27 years until her passing in 1996.
Leonard worked with various employers in southeast Nebraska until retiring from his position on the Nemaha County road crew. He continued to sell vegetables from his garden after his retirement. In his spare time, Leonard enjoyed being outdoors hunting, fishing, or gardening. He also liked going to the casino or going dancing.
As an active member of the community of Nemaha, Leonard served on the school board, town board, volunteer fire department, and as city water commissioner. He was a charter member of the Auburn Eagles Club, and had played with the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps.
On Sunday, September 5, 2010, after not responding to family phone calls, Leonard was found at his home in Nemaha having passed away at the age of 87 years, 9 months, and 10 days. In addition to his wives and parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Elmer, Harold, Carl, and Merle.
Leonard is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law Jon, Sr. and Joan of Effingham, KS; Van of Nemaha; Michael and LeaAnn of Nemaha; daughter Lynne of Claremore, OK; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Mrs. Merle (Gwendolyn) Allen; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Funeral services were Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn, officiated by Rev. Michael Schmidt. Special pre-recorded music was played. Pallbearers were Kirk Allen, Kent Allen, Jon Allen, Jr., Tyler Durant-Allen, Jim Zeleny, and Tim Nichols. Steve Sherman and Verne Heskett served as honorary pallbearers. Sharon Hessler and Diana Perry were flower attendants. Burial was in the Nemaha Cemetery, with graveside military honors by American Legion Post #23 of Auburn and the Nebraska National Guard Honor Team.
