Joyce Elaine Able, one of two children of Ernest and Lillie Josephine (Rawson) Able, was born August 25, 1942 in Auburn, Nebraska. She attended country school and then Auburn High School, where she graduated in 1960. Joyce then earned her degree in teaching at Peru State College at Peru, Nebraska.
Joyce taught elementary school in Papillion, Nebraska for a few years, and then moved to Virginia where she taught in the Fairfax Public School. In all she taught for 34 years. She retired from Fairfax and returned to Auburn to care for her mother.
Joyce was a member of the Bethel Community Church near Auburn and held memberships in various education organizations as well. She had volunteered with Tabitha Hospice and the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn. She enjoyed travelling and had been to all parts of the world. Joyce also enjoyed watching sports on TV, but most of all she liked going to the sporting events of her great-niece and -nephew.
As a result of her failing health, Joyce became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn in late December 2019. It was there she passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2020 at the age of 78 years, 3 months, and 24 days. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Arnold.
Joyce is survived by her sister-in-law Raynell Able of Auburn; nieces and nephew Jill and Jeremy Allen of Nemaha; Jody Able of Auburn; great-niece Kylie Allen; great-nephew Blake Allen; other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be Wednesday, December 23, 10:00 a.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Visitation will be Tuesday 9:00 a.m. to 8 p.m. Family will greet friends 6:00 to 7:00. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery at Peru. Current social distancing and mask requirements will be in place, and the funeral will be Livetreamed.
