John Clayton Hauserman, one of two children of Clayton John and Gladys Pearl (Thompson) Hauserman, was born March 26, 1934, in Hastings, Nebraska. He grew up in Central City, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school. Jay, as he was known by most people, went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from UNMC College of Dentistry. While in college he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
On June 15, 1958, Jay was united in marriage in Central City to Jeanne Greving, whom he first met in third grade. They would soon make their home in Auburn, Nebraska, and be blessed with two children, Douglas and Darcie.
Jay entered the United States Navy on July 12, 1958, and served at NAS Barbers Point in Hawaii. After his honorable discharge in June of 1960, Jay and Jeanne moved to Auburn to start his dental practice and raise their family.
In addition to serving and caring for his patients in Auburn and the surrounding communities from 1960 to 2001, Jay also was a part time faculty member at the UNMC College of Dentistry from 1969-2002.
Always active in his community, Jay sat on and was an officer on various boards, including Great Plains Federal Savings and Loan and the Peru State College Foundation. He served on many Auburn city commissions, including overseeing construction projects while on the Auburn Swimming Pool Board and as Chairman of the City/County Airport Zoning and Planning board. He also held positions on several committees for the Nebraska Dental Association.
Jay was active in the Auburn First Presbyterian Church serving as a youth group advisor, an elder, a deacon, and a trustee. He played tenor saxophone in the Southeast Community Band and belonged to the Auburn JayCees. He was a longtime member and chairman of the Educational Service Unit #4 Board, including during construction of the Life Skills Building.
A man of intelligence with a knowledge of a wide range of subjects, Jay was quick witted and had a great sense of humor. He was interested in youth and guiding them with a good moral compass. Throughout all his life and many interests, including widespread travel, Jay never neglected caring for his family, friends, or patients.
In recent years Jay and Jeanne sold their home in Auburn and moved to Pacific Springs Village in Omaha, Nebraska. It was at their home in Pacific Springs that Jay passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2025, just 20 days short of his 91st birthday. His parents, parents-in-law, brother-in-law Gerard Laureyns, and nephew Kyle Kuhn preceded him in death.
Jay is survived by his wife, Jeanne, of Omaha; son Doug (partner Robert Williams) of Omaha; daughter Darcie Briggs (husband Mike) of Yankton, SD; grandsons Tye and Zac Briggs; sister Sara Laureyns; sister-in-law Gwynne (Bob) Kuhn; nephews Brett (Tami) Kuhn, Jim (Maura) Kuhn, Shawn (Ellen) Laureyns, Ryan (Andrea) Laureyns; as well as many other relatives and friends.
