Helen Marie (Bohling) Volker, 91, passed away at Good Samaritan Society in Auburn, NE on April 9, 2021. Helen was born on March 8, 1930 and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul (Hickory Grove) Lutheran Church. After graduating from Auburn High School, Helen worked at the Auburn State Bank.
May 8, 1951 Helen married Otto Volker at Hickory Grove and then transferred to St. James (Long Branch) Lutheran Church. To this union they were blessed with 5 children, Cindy, Jeanne, Barb, Lisa, and Brad.
After getting married, Helen left the workforce to become a homemaker. Helen was a devoted homemaker and mother, working the family farm while raising her children. She enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking for her family, and sewing outfits for her children. Helen was always happy to cook for her family and drop in guests.
Throughout her lifetime, she was an active 4-H Leader. She was also very active and served in leadership positions in the St. James WELCA (women’s group). Helen and Otto both enjoyed singing in the choir. Helen spent many years teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
Once her family was raised, she returned to the workforce and worked for many years cooking at the Nemaha County Hospital. Once Helen and Otto retired, they moved from the farm into Johnson. They enjoyed many years there with kids and grandkids visiting them frequently. In 2017, Helen moved to Longs Creek Assisted Living in Auburn, NE where she enjoyed daily devotions, social activities, and lots of fellowship.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Otto, daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Wayne Gerdes, and great grandsons, Damian Gerdes and Otto Jon Volker, her parents, Clarence & Ottina (Schlange) Bohling, brother Orville & Edith Bohling, sisters Mildred & Norman Gerdes, Verna & Glenn Koehler, sister-in-law Ruth Bohling and brother-in-law Lloyd Rathke
Survivors include her daughters Jeanne & Jim Haith of Johnson, Barb & Dave Ahlschwede of Lincoln, Lisa & Danny Wenzl of Burchard, son, Brad & Janice Volker of Johnson, brother Harlan Bohling, sisters Margorie & Willard Kuhlman, Auburn, Carol Rathke, Iowa City and sister-in-law Evelyn (Volker) Johnson of Lincoln, 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and many other family and friends.
A memorial service will be Saturday, April 17, 10:30 a.m. at St. James Lutheran (Long Branch) Church near Humboldt. Social distancing will be in place and masks are required, and the service will be broadcast on 87.9 FM in the church parking lot. Visitation will be at the funeral home Friday 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 5:00 to 7:00.
