Fred A. Schizas Ii

December 12, 1950 — August 15, 2020

Fred Apostle Schizas II, son of Dean and Beverly (Andelt) Schizas, was born December 12, 1950 in Lincoln, Nebraska. One of four children, Fred spent his early years and attended school in Lincoln. The family moved to Omaha, Nebraska where he graduated from Burke High School. Fred went on to attend the University on Nebraska-Lincoln and earned a degree in mechanical engineering.

On November 10, 1972 Fred was united in marriage to Jeanne Lavelle at St.

Cecilia Catholic Church in Omaha. They would be blessed with two children, Alicia and Kyle.

Fred served 26 years in the Nebraska National Guard from June 23, 1981 until his honorable discharge on September 27, 2007. In 2001 he entered active duty during Operation Joint Guardian and served in Germany, Macedonia, and Kosovo.

He retired from the Guard with the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Fred worked at Cooper Nuclear Station at Brownville, Nebraska from June 1989 until his retirement in July 2017. At the time of his retirement he was SRO/STE in the Operations Department.

Fred was a tinkerer, he was always fixing or building something. A man of many interests, Fred had numerous hobbies. He had remote control cars, helicopters, and planes, all of which he built. He was a gamer, Call Of Duty 4 being a favorite, and he built the computer he used to play games on. Fred enjoyed shooting sports, both for competition and hunting, and he built some of the guns that he owned. He enjoyed fixing and restoring cars, whether it was working on Jeanne’s 1967 Corvette or his drag-racing car. Fred loved to read, anything from the cereal box while having breakfast or an entire encyclopedia. He enjoyed gardening and taking care of his fruit trees in his little orchard. He was also a chess player, playing chess through the mail by postcard and using Jeanne as his guinea pig to make sure he was sending the correct move back.

After receiving a diagnosis of rare blood cancers within his body, Fred chose to stay at home with the help of Jeanne, other family, and medical professionals. It was at his home in Auburn he passed away, with family around him, on Saturday, August 15, 2020 at the age of 69 years, 8 months, and 3 days. His father Dean and sister Nancy Schizas preceded him in death.

Those left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life include his wife Jeanne of Auburn; mother Beverly Schizas of Omaha; daughter and son-in-law Alicia and Brian Hoffman of Bloomington, IN; son and daughter-in-law Kyle and Rachel Schizas of Nebraska City; grandchildren Hayley, Alexandria, Dominic, and Isabel; sisters Susan (Larry) Burke and Deana Schizas; other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was Thursday, August 20, 2020 at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn officiated by Rev. Mike Harris of Omaha. Kyle Schizas was urnbearer and Alicia Hoffman carried the flag. Burial of ashes was in the Omaha National Cemetery, with military honors by Nebraska National Guard Honors Detail and Millard American Legion Post #374 and VFW Post #8334.
