Evelyn May (White) Anderson, one of three children of Calvin Roy and Florence (Wilcoxson) White, was born June 2, 1934 in Jewell, Kansas. She attended school in Portis and Smith Center in Kansas until 1945, when her family moved to Nemaha County in Nebraska. Evelyn then attended school in Nemaha, Nebraska.
On July 27, 1951 Evelyn married Hobert M. Anderson in Union, Nebraska. They were blessed with five sons: Hobert, Doug, Dave, Dan, and Don. The couple raised their sons on a farm near Stella, Nebraska, but would later divorce.
Evelyn, in addition to taking care of her family and the household, helped Hobe with the farming and their dairy herd. She later owned and operated Anderson’s Tavern in Stella. She ran the tavern for 29 years until selling it in 1999.
Evelyn was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nemaha. She was a great cook, known for her fried chicken. She loved tending to her yard and garden and raising chickens. In her spare time she liked to bowl, and continued bowling for many years. First in her life was always her children and grandchildren, and she never missed activities that involved her family.
After a fall in January of 2013, Evelyn’s health gradually began to fail. In March of 2014 she was admitted to Bryan LGH East Medical Center in Lincoln, where she passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the age of 79 years, 9 months, and 13 days. Her parents, former husband Hobert, and son Hobert preceded her in death.
Those left to mourn her passing include her sons and daughters-in-law Doug and Gabriella of Windlesham, England; Dave and Jana of Stella; Dan and Teresa of Nemaha; Don and Cathy of Lincoln; grandchildren Ginger and husband David Chrisman, Erin and husband Jesse Smith, Davis, Daniel, Francesca, and Fedi Anderson; Dustin and Dru Anderson, Cassidy and husband Billy Lotter; Devin and Libby Anderson, Lynsey George; Mitchell, Brock, and Brady Anderson; great-grandchildren Chaelee, Brynlee, Leon, and Rowan; sister and brother-in-law Everna and Ray Grooms of Nemaha; brother and sister-in-law Alvin and Nancy White of Auburn; special friend John Banks of Stella; other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be Wednesday, March 19, 10:30 a.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Burial will follow in the Nemaha Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00.
