Eldon Dean Neddenriep, only son of John H. and Lydia (Panning) Neddenriep, was born August 20, 1925 at his home place near Johnson, Nebraska. Two sisters were also born to this union. Eldon was baptized on September 13, 1925 at St. Paul Hickory Grove Lutheran Church. He was confirmed there on June 2, 1940. Eldon attended Roosevelt School and graduated from Johnson High School in 1944.
On February 28, 1948 Eldon was married to Shirley Barnes at the Coryell Park Chapel near Brock, Nebraska. They lived on a farm near the home place where Eldon farmed with his dad. They began their family and in 1956 moved to the home place where Eldon lived the rest of his life. He maintained his membership at Hickory Grove Lutheran Church where his five sons were baptized and confirmed.
Eldon was a lifetime cattleman, and in 1967 he began a business raising and selling Nebraska Specific Pathogen Free Swine. He was in the business the next 35 years. Other aspects of his farming career included custom hay baling and conservation of the soil. Eldon had many miles of terraces constructed and two large farm ponds built.
Eldon enjoyed following the progress of his 12 grandchildren as they grew up and watching the growth of his 14 great-grandchildren. He was a lifetime member of both the North American Limousin Foundation and United Duroc Swine Registry. Two of the many awards he received were the Nebraska SPF Producer Award and the Southeast Quad County Pork Producers Achievement Award.
Due to Alzheimer ?s disease, Eldon took a severe fall on April 27, 2010. He rallied after being superbly cared for by the Johnson Quick Response Team and a period in Bryan LGH West, but could not recover from his injuries. He passed away at Good Samaritan Society-Auburn on May 6, 2010, surrounded by his family. Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, sister Marie, and son Tom.
Eldon is survived by his wife Shirley of Johnson; sons and daughters-in-law John A., Terry and Marley, all of Lincoln; David and Debbie of Omaha; Lonnie and Penny of Johnson; grandsons and spouses Tom and Carrie, Wade and Lisa, Mitch and Jessica, all of Lincoln; Jesse and Sarah of Falls City; Kyle and Jennifer of Indianapolis, IN; and Mark of Johnson; granddaughters and spouses Shelly and Dr. Jacob Christian of St. Joseph, MO; Jamie and Andrew Phillips, Rita Neddenriep, Tara and Craig Lundy, all of Lincoln; Katie Neddenriep of Omaha; and Lindsey Neddenriep of Springfield, MO; 14 great-grandchildren; sister Betty Dawson of Tecumseh; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 13, 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul (Hickory Grove) Lutheran Church near Auburn, officiated by Rev. Paul Lillenas. Deanne Gerking will be accompanist for a solo by Janell Johnson and congregational hymns. Pallbearers will be grandsons Tom Neddenriep, Wade Neddenriep, Mitch Neddendriep, Jesse Neddenriep, Kyle Neddenriep, and Mark Neddenriep. Granddaughters Shelly Christian, Jamie Phillips, Rita Neddenriep, Tara Lundy, Katie Neddenriep, and Lindsey Neddenriep will serve as flower attendants. Honorary pallbearers are Harold Wagner, Gilbert Johnson, Harold Oestmann, Russ Smith, LaVerne Michel, Richard Hull, and John Henderson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
