Doris Gael Gebers, one of three children of George W. and Lena (Hackwell) Gebers, was born June 28, 1928, at Exira, Iowa. Doris grew up around Exira and attended country school through the 8th grade. Her family then moved to Auburn, Nebraska where she attended her first three years at Auburn High School, before finishing her last year of high school with American School.
On June 28, 1949, Doris was united in marriage to Walter Henry Fred Gebers at St. Paul (Hickory Grove) Lutheran Church near Auburn. The couple would be blessed with five children: Linda Sue, Ronald James, Charles Leroy, Judy Lynn, and Lisa Marie. Doris and Walt made their home in and around Auburn until moving to Johnson in August of 1957. They bought their first home on the east edge of Johnson in February 1967, and in 1988 bought their home on the northwest corner of Johnson.
Doris first worked for Mrs. Charlie Darling. She then went to work at Johnson-Brock Schools and then Good Samaritan Center in Auburn, working with the food program at both places. Doris then worked for 27 years at the café in Johnson where she was very well known for her pies. She retired from working the café in April of 2007.
Doris was baptized at St. Paul (Hickory Grove) Lutheran Church in October of 1949. She and Walt joined Zion Lutheran Church in January of 1958, where Doris was very involved. In her free time, Doris enjoyed quilting and putting together puzzles. She was an animal lover, and also loved taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
After retiring from the café in Johnson, Doris and Walt moved to Auburn. In October 2022, Doris moved to the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn. It is there that she passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2023, having reached the age of 94 years, 8 months, and 12 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walt, an infant daughter, brother Raymond, and sister Pearl.
Those left to remember her caring ways include her children and their spouses Linda and Winston Rice of Clarita, OK, Ron and Kathy Gebers of Johnson, Charles and Gloria Gebers of Clarita, OK, Judy and Dwayne Feighner of Auburn, Lisa Finch of Lincoln; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Rose Gebers of Lincoln, Inez Gebers of Auburn; other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held Friday, March 17, 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church north of Johnson. Burial will follow in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 6:00 to 8:00.
