Doris Elizabeth (Shols) Black, one of two daughters of Ezra and Eva (Glabe) Shols, was born February 14, 1926 in Peoria, Illinois. She attended public school in Peoria, graduated from high school there, and then attended the University of Illinois.
On August 25, 1946 Doris was united in marriage to Richard Black in Peoria. They initially lived in Texas after their wedding. The family would grow to include two sons, Tom and Larry. Dorie and Richard and their family also lived in New Mexico and Louisiana before the couple retired in Lakeview, Arkansas in 1976.
Although Dorie worked part time as secretary at her church and did volunteer work, her primary focus was on her family and running her household. She loved to sew and grow plants, and her art background contributed to her interest in arts and crafts.
Dorie was a member of the Presbyterian church while living in Arkansas. She and Richard belonged to the Three Rivers Twirlers Square Dance Club in Arkansas, and Dorie was selected as the Arkansas Poultry Queen more than once for her cooking skills. She was an avid bridge player, and even belonged to a poker club.
In June of 2008 Dorie moved to Auburn, Nebraska and the Long's Creek Village Assisted Living Center. While in Auburn she belonged to the First United Methodist Church. Later in the year Dorie became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn, and enjoyed her time spent there. She passed away at Good Sam on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the age of 83 years, 8 months, and 22 days. Her parents, husband Richard, and son Larry preceded her in death.
Doris is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Tom and Sherry Black of Auburn; grandchildren Brenda and husband Greg Verkuilen; Lawrence and wife Molly Black; great-grandsons Barrett Verkuilen and Kadin Black; sister and brother-in-law Margie and Roger Scholten of Boston, MA; other relatives and friends.
