Dennis D Gerdes

Dennis D. Gerdes was born January 29, 1928 to Harold Thomas and Laura (Behrends) Gerdes on the family farm near Auburn, Nebraska. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran (Stone) Church south of Auburn. He attended rural elementary school through the eighth grade, after which he worked the family farm.

Dennis was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Drewel November 18, 1949 at Zion’s Evangelical & Reform Church in Talmage, Nebraska and together raised four children. He was a lifelong farmer. After retiring, the couple moved into Auburn, where he enjoyed yardwork, flowers, dancing, cards, friends, and family.

Dennis passed away March 7, 2020 at Good Samaritan Society-Auburn.

He is survived by his children Rodney and Mercedes Gerdes of Valentine, NE, Rhonda and Bernard Sypal of Custer, SD, Gail and Charles Mack of Verdon, NE; grandchildren Valerie and Cody Black, Jared and Jalin Gerdes, Katrina and David Duncan, Joshua and April Sypal; great-grandchildren; brother and sisters-in-law Dave and Karen Gerdes, Virginia Gerdes; brothers-in-law Larry Bohlken, Cecil Bykerk, Delbert and Bonnie Drewel; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy, brothers Milburn and Lindell Gerdes, sisters and brothers-in-law Lola and Bob Mehlin, Donna and Lloyd Volker, Loree Bykerk, Iva Bohlken, and son Lyle L. Gerdes.

A funeral service will be Thursday, March 12, 2020, 2:00 p.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Burial will follow in Sheridan West Cemetery at Auburn. Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:30 to 8:00.
