Darlene Estella (Rowen) Davis was born to Archie rowen and Ella (Colerick) Rowen on January 18, 1914 on a farm west of Nemaha, Nebraska near what was called Bracken, Nebraska. When she was nine months old the family moved to a farm southwest of Nemaha where she lived the rest of her childhood. Darlene attended eight years of school at Larkin country school, the same school her father attended. She attended and graduated from Nemaha High School and graduated from Peru Teacher?s College in 1936.
Darlene taught three terms at Larkin and then for three years at Batesland, South Dakota.
On September 28, 1940 Darlene was married to Lloyd Davis of Batesland in Rushville, Nebraska. In the spring of 1942 they moved to a farm southwest of Nemaha near the Shubert, Nebraska area for several years. On March 28, 1947 on son, Harold, was born to this union. In 1949 the family moved to a farm south of Nemaha. While living there Darlene taught typing, bookkeeping, and math at Nemaha High School until its closing in 1966. She also was chief cook and bottle washer of a daily milk, eggs, and cream delivery route in Nemaha.
Darlene was active in the Nemaha Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School, belonged to Kensington, and served as treasurer of all three organizations in the church. Darlene and Lloyd were active in Pork Producers on both the local and state levels, and also the McCandless School group. In recent years Darlene also helped her son Harold at the Brownville Mills in Brownville.
In the 1990?s Darlene moved to her father?s old home in Nemaha. With the help of Esther Moore for yard work and Karen Overgaard for indoor assistance Darlene was able to live by herself until March of 2012.
At that time Darlene was admitted to the Nemaha County Hospital and from there entered the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn on March 27. She passed away at Good Sam on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the age of 98 years, 4 months, and 29 days. She was preceded in death by her parents Ella in 1951 and Archie in 1985, infant brother, and husband Lloyd in 1987.
Darlene is survived by her son Harold and friend Pat; grandchildren David and wife Lisa Davis of Auburn; Debby and husband Joe Cox of Idaho; Dan and wife Victoria Davis of Redman, OR; DeeAnn Davis of Brownville; nine grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were Thursday, June 21, 2012 at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn, officiated by Pastor Doyle Karst. Special music was prepared by Harold Davis, with accompaniment by David Norris. Inurnment of ashes will be in the Nemaha Cemetery near Nemaha.
