Charles Adams

August 14, 1925 — February 19, 2011

Charles Dean Adams, one of three sons of Harley William and Agnes Lela (Bertwell) Adams, was born August 14, 1925 in Peru, Nebraska. He attended Indian School in Peru, rural school near Brock, and graduated from Auburn High School in 1943.

Dean entered the U. S. Army in November 1943 and served with the 89th Mechanized Cavalry Recon Troop during World War II. After serving as a radio operator with his unit in Europe and returning to the States, Dean was honorably discharged in April 1946.

On November 20, 1947 Dean was united in marriage to T. Georgine Craig in Auburn. They made their home in Auburn and were blessed with two daughters, Cydene and Jolene.

After his return from the war, Dean began farming near Brock, Nebraska and also started selling feed. He soon became a substitute mail carrier for the Auburn Post Office, and in 1966 became Postmaster of the Auburn office. He continued in that position until retiring in 1982. After his retirement, Dean continued to look after the family farm, was an antique dealer spanning more than 40 years and enjoyed restoring his house.

Dean was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Auburn, the Elks and Eagles Clubs, American Legion and V.F.W., and the Masons. He also served on the Auburn Volunteer Fire Department. In his spare time he enjoyed carpentry, antiques, camping, dancing, and music. Dean was known to always have a good joke. In later years Dean and Georgine wintered in Arizona, enjoying being with their daughter Cyd and other Auburn residents in the area, and sightseeing.

Because of failing health, Dean moved to Arizona in November 2010 to live with Cyd. He entered Hospice of the Valley Dobson Home in mid-February 2011, and passed away there on Saturday, February 19, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Georgine of almost 60 years, brothers H. Gene and S. Cecil Adams, and grandson Levi D. Alvis.

Dean is survived by his daughters Cydene G. Adams of Chandler, AZ; Jolene B. (Adams) Picard and husband Keith of Harleysville, PA; grandsons Seth A. Alvis of Chandler, AZ; Jesse L. Alvis of Philadelphia, PA; other relatives and countless friends.
