Betty Reid

Betty Jane (Swoboda) Reid was born April 23, 1923 on the family farm near Osceola, Nebraska. She was one of five children of Edward and Stella (Orr) Swoboda. Betty attended school in Beatrice, and graduated from high school there.

On August 31, 1952 Betty was united in marriage to W. Deane Reid at St. John?s Lutheran Church in Beatrice. They were blessed with two children, Kathy and Scott.

After high school, Betty worked at Store Kraft Manufacturing and then later at the Gage County Courthouse in Beatrice. While she and Deane were in York, she was employed as a receptionist in a health clinic, and then after moving to Auburn as a secretary at Bulk Carriers.

Betty was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Auburn, and was involved in activities there. She enjoyed playing bridge in her bridge club and golf with her husband. She was a meticulous housekeeper, and got a lot of enjoyment from her grandkids.

Shortly after Deane?s death in June of 2007, Betty began a battle with cancer that would cause her to move to the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn. It was there she passed away on Friday, July 3, 2009 at the age of 86 years, 2 months, and 10 days. Other than her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and three brothers.

Betty is survived by her daughter Kathy and husband Harold Fass of Auburn; son Scott and wife Ronda Reid of Auburn; grandchildren Mike and wife Angie Fass; Megan Fass and fiance Ryan; Kristin Fass; James and wife Jeana Reid; David and wife Nichole Reid; Tricia and husband Chris Doty; great-grandchildren Luke Reid, Laden Reid, Payton Doty, and one on the way; sister-in-law Dee Swoboda of California; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be Thursday, July 9, 2009 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Auburn, with Pastor Bud Christenson officiating. Elaine Schlange will be organist for congregational hymns, and the trio of Annette VonBergen, Janell Johnson, and Amy McAlexander will sing a special hymn. Inurnment of ashes will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice.
