Alexander John Mayfield, son of John and Sheila (Wolfe) Mayfield, was born March 15, 1981, in Auburn, Nebraska. Alex grew up in Auburn, attending Auburn Public Schools.
Alex was united in marriage to Julie Murphy; the couple made their home in Auburn.
Alex began umpiring at a young age, he and John traveled all over umpiring anything from City-Rec to Men’s slow-pitch softball. He was a lifelong member of the Sons of the American Legion and was proud to honor veterans assisting with military honors at funerals. He loved to play pool, fish, and socialize. He was an avid fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. Alex also enjoyed annual trips to the College World Series. He loved spending time with his nephews Tayton and Tannon shooting nerf guns.
After going missing on July 31, 2024, Alex was found on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at Brownville. Having reached the age of 43 years, 4 months, and 23 days, he was preceded in death by his mother Shiela; grandparents Bob and Laverne Mayfield, Tom and Bonnie Wolfe; uncle and aunt Steve and Peggy Mayfield; and niece Grace Allgood.
Those left to mourn his loss include his wife Julie Murphy of Auburn and her 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren; father John Mayfield of Auburn; sisters and brothers-in-law Amanda and Jeff Powell of Auburn, Melanie and Dan Duncan of Uncertain, TX; nieces and nephews Faith Allgood, Addy and Carter Duncan, Tayton and Tannon Holmes; other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be Wednesday, August 14, 11:00 a.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date in Sheridan Cemetery at Auburn.
